Another New Design Project Started in Port Orange
We have started a new project in Port Orange. As usual, we will be spending more time in prep work, as this project is loaded with the infamous torpedo grass. Once we have prepared the area, quarantined the perimeter beds and removed all of the invasive species within, we can begin installation of the approved design. This one will be really fun because we are introducing and creating elements we have not see in landscapes before!
Port Orange Project New Landscape Update
We now have the landscaping installed and are waiting for the customer to make a decision on the color of rock. We want to stay with a lighter color as the house is very dark and the purple garden foliage will really show of nicely. Approaching the final phase of the project this week…adding the tumbled stone border and 20+ tons of pink/white river rock.
Project Completion
We still have a few items to complete, but we are finally at the proverbial finish line. It has been quite a transformation process, starting with the most daunting task of removing all of the invasive torpedo grass. Then we move onto: Transplanting all of the material in a comprehensive design. Installing a French drain system Installing new landscaping material. Installing new drip irrigation and adjusting the irrigation for the remaining portion of the residence. Installing decorative river rock in the front yard front and in the back yard around the pool area. Pine bark for the sides of the home. Lastly, new sod for areas disturbed in the remodel. A great project for a great family!
Florida Friendly Certified - Port Orange
Exotic Designs Landscaping is proud to serve Port Orange and as the 1st certified Florida Landscape Designer in Port Orange, not to mention in Florida. We enjoy that designation being a charter member as Florida Friendly Certified and are committed to designing in the way that considers and protects Florida’s natural resources and wildlife.
Don’t get us wrong, we also enjoy designing tropical landscapes very much, but only when non-invasive plants are used. “We look at the long term of a design” not just how nice it looks when it is first installed.
You can check out the list of University of Florida – Friendly Landscape Certified professionals here. We are listed under the Orange county heading, where we first started our operations.
A New French Drain System Nears Completion
We are pleased to be working on a new French drain system. Every system has it’s own unique set of challenges and this one is no different. Developers build in areas that were either wet lands at one point or just have a high water table. The clients yard was constantly wet and soggy. We love being able to solve this problem and move the water to the rear swale or front water system. We also did a lot of measures that may seem like overkill, but we believe it is more important for the system to have long term results. The yard in this area will be dry and usable, with very little evidence of a French drain.
Thanks for the opportunity.
Repurposing Podocarpus
Timing was perfect for this client recent. They were on a very tight budget and wanted to hide the neighbors newly installed fence. As fate would have it, another client we were also working with wanted us to remove and redo/revise their existing landscaping. We removed all of those beautiful podocarpus, 5-6′ the client didn’t want that were installed from the builder.
It turned out to be a win-win for everybody and we did not have waste the material by taking it to the to the dump. If we can repurpose material and donate it somewhere, we are pleased to do so!
A Beautiful Day at the Beach!
It is great when you are close to the beach and just stop by to take a look!
Rooster on the Trail
The rooster that was dropped off on the trail and many of us have been feeding hasn’t been around for a while. We hope for the best…he really was a nice rooster.
A Florida Zebra long leaf butterfly on this Firebush.
A Florida Gulf Fritillary enjoying the nectar from the bounty of flowers on this Ixora bush.
A Lubber enjoying the leaf and a Florida Monarch enjoying the flower of this Crynum lily.
A baby Rat snake getting some sun along the trail. Very intimidating but completely harmless…except to rats.
A beautiful ponytail specimen on a recent ride. This one would be priceless
Recently Installed Sylvester Palms in Port Orange
It was a pleasure working with Kat and Dave on their home. They recently were told to remove their live oak, as it was considered diseased. Needless to say they were not happy to have to remove such a beautiful tree. The two Sylvester palms can’t replace a majestic old oak, but they do fill a bit of a void and in a cost effective way.
Citrus Canker?
A client of ours recently had these corky lesions develop on the leaves. We treated and fertilized the citrus, but are now concerned the problem is citrus canker. We have sent images to University of Florida and waiting on the results. It is unfortunate because canker requires the citrus be destroyed and the trees are just now flushing out with new abundant new growth from the treatment and fertilizer. Canker has been the death of Florida citrus, so it is something that you can’t mess around with. Fingers crossed.
River Oak Stumps left Behind
The previous contractor left behind stumps from river oaks they had cut down. The even covered them up with weed barrier, so nobody knew they were there. Before the remaining robellini palms can be installed, these stumps need to be removed. No accounting for poor workmanship.
Walkway into Pure Nature
This is a beautiful walkway we found when we visited Lake Placid. There is this amazing audio of wildlife that is so tranquil, we could listen to the sounds of nature for hours. Hope this is something you enjoy as much as we enjoyed visiting and taping this segment.
New Plants for the Florida Landscape
We have a few new plants to use in the landscape. Ground orchid needs filtered light, but the hedge hog and the abelia are full sun plants. Nice material to use placed in the right arrangement.
Eastern Great Egret
At the end of another beautiful Florida day, we had this visitor inspecting the property. We would like to think it was happy with the new landscaping we just installed, but we know it was just a good location for fresh lizards.
Our new equipment added to service our clients
Easter sunrise at New Smyrna Beach
A white domestic turkey lost in a field in Edgewater
Here we have a patch of mature saw palmettos and an island of philodendron selloum. Our goal is to clean up thee islands so the client will keep them, instead of us bull dozing them over.
Here is the end result of the cleaned up areas. We hope that the client will see the elegance of the aged material and decide to keep the native saw palmettos.
In our process of the clean up, we uncovered a native corn snake (non-venomous). These snakes are very helpful in keeping down rodent and other pests in check and balance of nature.
Our recent visit to the Como arboretum
We wanted to share these amazing bonsai’s from the Como arboretum and observatory. Some of these were meticulously crafted from over 50 years.
We were thinking of this craft because we recently added a variegated Bougainville dwarf as a center piece in a customers courtyard. As long as it is maintained, it will be an amazing show piece for the home. The template is already in place, just the occasional snip here and there. Picture of our contribution as a bonsai are the last images. Not quite as compact as traditional bonsai, but obviously required to be a bit larger than traditional bonsai for presentation purposes.
Images of the overall project will appear upon final completion.
A New Project Requiring a lot of Cleanup/Prep Work
We started a new project in Port Orange that required a lot of clean up/prep work. A tree service company the client had hired previously had merely cut down the trees in the yard and pushed all of the debris/cuttings into a big pile. Quite the disaster to clean up and remove. Also, Kudza vine, Muscadine vine and Carolina creeper were overgrowing and killing all of the native material in the yard by suffocating and choking everything out.
We were lucky to discover many Saw palmetto palms still alive. We were also able to reveal several river oaks that were struggling for light from the vines. All of the vines had to be removed from the roots to keep them from resuming their invasive destruction. To have this beautiful, open yard and revealing the native material was a spectacular find.
The other item not visible in these images is the drainage issues. We regraded the yard to slope to a new swale area in the back of the yard and carry runoff into the woods. Previously, the client had pools of water close to the home. We sloped the yard so that not only does the client have a yard, but also will not be a swamp in the back yard as well.
The next phase will be the landscaping to compliment the native material the client already has in the yard.
Another fun project in Port Orange!
Exotic Designs Becomes Drainage Certified Contractors
With all of the problems Volusia county residents are having with drainage and water retention problems, we wanted to be able to help. The best way was to become certified as drainage experts in solving these problems. The timing couldn’t have been better, we were able to assist clients that had sever water retention in their back yard. Other contractors had simply told them to just add many yards of fill dirt. That would have ended up flowing the next storm water runoff into their house. We were happy to help and timing is everything.
